Is RB going to be in charge of saying, "Onward into the storm!" or "release the doves!" or "SPOON!" or anything when the virtual lever is released and pandora's box has officially been opened? I think we need SOME fanfare to go along with the release.

Does anyone know how to play the trumpet?

Ron

No, actually, the ramp-up was started.

The big lever in the sky that he was referring to was when the version is issued for general release - as in, open the flood gates, brace for impact, that sort of thing.

Maybe the big lever in the sky isn't so much a simple 2 position switch - maybe it's a dimmer...

You're wrong! If you read the entire post he says that they start off a release with a small ramp of people to judge customer service response, and customer reaction to the new software. If all goes well they move on to a slightly bigger ramp, and so on, and so on.

He said he was going to start the first ramp yesterday, which means a small number of non-beta testers are going to get it, but the big lever has NOT been pulled. Based on past betas that probably wont happen for another 4-6 weeks. Although you may get lucky and end up in one of the first ramps.

So, since this is my first upgrade post-turbonet...

The process will be:

1) get 3.0
2) pull drives
3) reinstall the sysinit to give me the bash shell
4) recopy other useful programs (ftpd, etc)
5) put drives back in
6) go crazy..

Found! Do I win a prize? According to this thread…3.0 features a user named cubfan33any apparently seems to be getting it.

I didn't get it yet.

Oh well...hopefully soon.

I wonder if they are giving it out to a certain area first....like maybe California?

1) Buy a "supported" usb dongle.

4) Unplug the dongle from the laptop and pop it into the TiVo

People have used this method to connect TiVoNet cards to wireless networks, so it should work with USB dongles.

Dan

I am not very clear about this. I have a SMC WAP router SMC7004AWBR. So how would I be able to use any of the USB dongles mentioned in the list above to access my wireless 802.11b network ?

Will any of these work ?

Maybe, but they might just have locked everyone out via the prom like the series II (no way around yet) and the dtivo's with the 2.5 upgrade (has a workaround). So if you would be really peeved about losing use of those other programs- DONT let it upgrade till you hear its 'safe'.

I'm real curious to see what happens the day they finally do lock us out for good how ugly things get (could be 3.0, could be 33.0 but i would imagine at some point they will have no choice if they want to enable sharing etc.).

I would also like to mention for the people worrying about the release date that in the past RB has posted sign-up pages here so that we can get the update immediately. Usually once the lever is thrown random groups of people get upgraded every week until everyone is. As one of TiVo's many acts of goodwill he's let people in this forum bypass that process.

So stop worrying. You'll know when you can get it.

I had a message that I would be getting 2.5.1 installed. I thought that that was strange since I already had it. Does this mean I will be getting 3.0?

Another side note is that the roll out will happen by Tivo serial numbers, not by how many times you tried to call in. So calling in every 10 mins will not get you v3.0 any earlier, in fact it might push your serial back if it comes up on their radar.... This is what happened in the past and I assume that is the same now.

There won't be a sign up to get it early. We already had a large early access program for this release.

what about those USB-->bluetooth adapter thingies...they're only around $49. Would be a pretty cool wireless way of connecting your Mac...er, PeeCee.

how hard would it be to get this going?

How hard? Impossible. There are no drivers for it, and Bluetooth doesn't function as an Ethernet device, which is what all the code is wrapped around. Bluetooth is more for connecting devices (sort of like a wireless, short-range USB) than it is for NETWORKING.
